WBS requires a fully integrated microbiology testing system including all the mandatory and discretionary microbiology testing within a managed service. This includes the assays, instrumentation and data management software to deliver a final result to the WBS information management system(s), eProgesa.
WBS has ONE testing site, collecting approximately 100,000 blood donations each year and this is expected to rise to 130,000 by 2016.
The Automated Testing department performs a wide range of testing services; these include the large-scale serological screening of blood donations for microbiological markers such as HBsAg, anti-HCV, combined HIV antigen/antibody, syphilis antibody, anti-HTLV (currently done on all donations in pools of 24) and anti-CMV.
There is also a requirement for smaller scale screening: for malaria antibodies, antibodies to T. cruzi (Chagas disease), and anti-HBc on selected donations. The full list of markers including current numbers tested and the full list of requirements is contained within the tender documents. All assays/test system must be approved by the NHSBT Microbiology Kit Evaluation Group.
The contract will commence on 1.12.2013, and will be for a period of 7 years.
Compliance with current GMP regulatory requirements including the European In-Vitro Diagnostic Directive is essential. All assays will be assessed for operational suitability against a detailed specification that will include sensitivity, specificity and process control.
