Request for Quotation for Marine Benthic Macroinvertebrate sample processing

Benthic infauna samples were collected using either a 0.1m2 Hamon grab or a 0.1m2 Day grab. Exact locations for each of the samples are included in the sample details sheet. The extraction of all benthic macroinvertebrates is to be completed following the contractors internal quality assurance methodology, ensuring that the NMBAQC guidelines for fauna extraction are met or exceeded. Samples have been sieved at sea on a 1mm mesh in order to remove fauna and residue less than 1mm, and are currently stored in 4% formaldehyde solution. Enumeration, identification and biomassing should be carried out following the NMBAQC Processing Requirement Protocol and Taxonomic Discrimination Protocol. Biomass to species level (wet weight in grams to 5 d.p.) is required for all countable taxa. A reference collection of all species identified should be returned to the Cefas laboratories in Lowestoft in an appropriate preservation liquid (i.e. 100% IDA or 70% IMS, 20% water and 10% glycerol). Species nomenclature should be the accepted name as per the ‘UK Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (2011). The Marine Species of the British Isles and Adjacent Seas (MSBIAS): a checklist of species derived from the UNICORN and Marine Recorder applications’ (available online at http://www.marinespecies.org/msbias/). The abundance and biomass data matrices should be in the Microsoft 97-2003 excel file format (‘Abundance_Biomass spreadsheet format.xls’) and sent electronically to the above contacts following completion. Station number, station code and replicate are provided in the sample details spreadsheet.
