391985-2012: UK-Derry: Building construction work

The North-West Regional Sports Campus (NWRSC) being commissioned by Derry City Council will be developed as a Centre of Sporting Excellence for the North-West region of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The proposal is a creative response to addressing disadvantage and sports development need which will facilitate outdoor programmes, high performance programmes and events for the North-West cross-border region.
Derry City Council aim to support the concept of sustainability in the design and operation of the Centre and as such aim to achieve a BREEAM rating of 'Very Good'. It is also proposed that the building should be fully accessible for the disabled and that the Centre should achieve the ISF Accreditation of Excellence as championed by Disability Sports NI.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified and competent principal contractors who wish to be included on a select list for the North West Regional Sports Campus comprising:
— A new building of approximately 4600 sq m;
— Demolition of the existing leisure centre;
— Extensive siteworks including two floodlit synthetic five-a-side pitches.
The new building will be sited in the grounds of St Columb's Park, Limavady Road, Derry, on the site of an existing shale hockey pitch. The existing St Columb's Leisure Centre, built in 1971, will be demolished as part of the contract.
The NWRSC will be developed as a Centre of Excellence for the sports of Judo, Wrestling and Mountaineering and is fully supported by the National Governing Bodies of each association. It is also proposed that the building is developed as an accredited Regional Performance Development Centre and becomes the base for Sport NI in the north-west. Flexibility and adaptability, inherent in the design will also allow the building to be used by the wider community for both sports and other cultural activities.
