English Heritage is inviting proposals for a study of shopping parades in the London area

English Heritage is inviting proposals for a study of shopping parades (for parameters, see below), to be delivered no later than 14th March 2013. The suburban shopping parade is a self-contained group of purpose-built shops (typically with flats above or other facilities) that usually forms an architectural ensemble, designed to serve a new residential district or suburb. It is one of the most characteristic non-residential building types associated with suburban development and is, therefore, important to understand when considering such areas. The brief for a discrete report on the historical development of the suburban shopping parade in London, c.1890-1939, forms part of the National Suburbs Project that is being undertaken by English Heritage over the next three years.
