The University of Surrey currently supports a network service to approximately 5 000 students study bedrooms located on four sites in Guildford. The service provides connectivity to University resources and to the internet over a single wired connection in each room. Demand for a more flexible service being delivered over wired and wireless mediums has grown and the University would like to meet those demands. Students and conference visitors now expect to be able to connect devices that do not have wired connectivity, for example smart phones, tablets and games consoles. They would also like to have the ability to tailor the service to their needs, for example additional bandwidth and cloud storage.
The University seeks to partner with suppliers who can help with the refresh of existing network hardware, provide wireless connectivity and manage the overall service. The University is keen to provide a single wireless service that would be compatible with the existing service on campus allowing users to roam seamlessly between academic and residential buildings.
The University also seeks to partner with suppliers who can meet the growing needs of the student population, managing them in a way similar to a commercial ISP, providing internet bandwidth, user and service management. Excellent customer service would be a key component of the contract.
