Decontamination Unit

County Durham & Darlington NHS Foundation Trust is required as part of its Emergency Preparedness response to have facilities for decontaminating patients following chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear contamination. This will replace existing equipment that is now obsolete and beyond serviceable repair. The unit required must be a purpose built semi-permanent structure that requires minimal effort to commission and operate. It requires a minimum of four staff to operate and man thus reducing the load on the emergency department. It must minimise manual handling hazards and provide secure containment of contaminated waste. It must have a disrobe, shower and redress facilities in one unit offering the patient modesty and protection from the elements. The unit must provide warm water shower capability. The specification required is a rigid structure of approximately 2.4 x 6m which can be made ready by a single member of staff with minimal training and in a reduced amount of time. It provides safe and protected environment for the decontamination process to be carried out and removes all manual handling concerns. There must also be no requirement for storage and transport of kit. It is intended only for the use of ambulant patients but some consideration needs to be made for wheelchair access or provision for a seated shower.
