PHE will be established as a new executive agency from 1 April 2013. Its overall mission will be to protect and improve the health and wellbeing of the population, and to reduce inequalities in health and wellbeing outcomes. Part of its remit will be to lead on the design, delivery and maintenance of systems to protect against the existing and future threats to health. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) will become part of PHE from 1 April 2013. The NIHR currently provides research funding to the HPA through the Centre for Health Protection Research (CHPR), that will continue until March 2014. From April 2014, health protection research funding of £9.5m a year will be awarded through open competition to universities in England in partnership with PHE, to form NIHR HPRUs. Contracts will run for five years.
