Hyde Park Parade Ground Smoke Vent Replacement Project

The Royal Parks manages eight of London’s Royal Parks – St James’s Park, The Green Park, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, The Regent’s Park (& Primrose Hill), Greenwich Park, Richmond Park and Bushy Park. It is also responsible for a number of other areas including Brompton Cemetery, Victoria Tower Gardens and Grosvenor Square Gardens. The Royal Parks is an executive agency of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The Chief Executive supported by the Senor Management Team, is responsible for the day to day management of the Royal Parks and is accountable to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. The Royal Parks’ inherent purpose is to conserve and improve the fabric of the Parks including their building and structures, to improve the presentation, safety and enjoyment of the Parks for the benefit of visitors and through its conservation policies to contribute to London’s biodiversity. Located underneath the grass/turfed Parade Ground within Hyde Park is a Car Park constructed in reinforced concrete with a total of 64 redundant smoke vents set 100mm underneath the tarmac pathways. The Royal Parks aim to replace all 64 redundant smoke vents with a steel plate, including the necessary waterproofing of the structure, which must be complete by mid-April 2013 ahead of The Royal Parks summer events season. The scope of works required will involve breaking out the existing 64 redundant smoke vents and replacing them all with a manufactured steel plate. The reinstatement of the tarmac footpaths, following the works would be required to a standard as set out by The Royal Parks. The chosen Contractor should be ready to start in early February 2013 and the works will need to be phased accordingly with another Contractor undertaking reinstatement works on the Parade Ground, in order to achieve the optimum programme. The Royal Parks are seeking a civils or structural Contractor, suitably experienced in reinforced concrete and capable of undertaking the task of replacing all 64 redundant smoke vents. Contractors will be expected to show strong practical experience of work within this field and experience of working within a public park environment would be an advantage but not essential.
