The Defence College of Policing and Guarding requires input on the Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) course to deliver specialist forensic training to a standard that if challenged in judicial proceedings, would stand up to scrutiny. The material delivered must be recognised and accepted by the forensic scientific community at large including: The Council for the Registration of Forensic Practitioners, The Forensic Science Society, Association of Chief Police Officers and the Home Office. All material delivered must be recognised as reflecting the most up to date legislation, research and development within each specialist area (as below). • The training is required for a maximum of 12 students per CSI course. • There are approximately x 4 CSI courses per training year (April-March). • The training shall be delivered over a 2 day period and must include the opportunity for students to observe a working forensic laboratory relevant to the subjects delivered. • Pre-read material for each lecture should be provided • Consideration to be given to award Continuation Professional Development accreditations in support of this training. Provision of forensic awareness training is to include but not necessarily limited to, the following areas: DNA: To include advancements, high sensitivity analysis benefits and limitations, intelligence options regarding DNA techniques, assessing DNA evidence, swabbing technique Drugs: To include commonly used illicit drugs, drug paraphernalia, forensic potential of drug material Documents and Handwriting Examinations: To include document examination, handwriting examination, taking handwriting samples, handling document evidence Firearms: To include evidence collection, description of material/potential evidential value, categorisation and legislation, firearms residue, collection methods, anti-contamination procedures Toxicology: To include impact of toxicology evidence, persistence rates, sampling requirements, pharmacological effects Blood Pattern Analysis: To include overview, terminology, common blood stains and how formed Fibres: To include forensic examinations (points of entry, vehicles and 1.1 mapping), recovery strategy, evidential value Marks and Contact Traces: To include description, collection, contamination and prevention, range of trace evidence / requirements of laboratory Serious Fatal Fires: To include investigation, role of forensic scientists, packaging requirements Exhumations: To include clandestine burial sites, role of forensic anthropologist & archaeologist, range potential evidence Sexual Assault: To include strategies, potential evidence, timescales and circumstances, anti-contamination measures, early intervention kits, samples and information required Case Histories: On all these areas of training, there is a requirement to underpin the knowledge with case histories and personal experiences.
