Dstl has a requirement to understand the potential benefits of using non-canine olfactory sensing animal models. These specifically include the use of small-animal models (e.g., rats, mice), insect models and the potential use of genetically modified animals to provide enhanced olfactory sensing capability. Dstl has a requirement to understand the potential benefits and risks of using small animal or insect models for olfactory sensing of Volatile Organic Compounds in situations where employment of a canine is undesirable. A limited number of small-animals models have been used for olfactory sensing by third-parties in the past; Dstl requires an understanding of the range of animal/insect models that are potentially available and the potential risks/timescales required to provide a fielded sensing capability. Dstl requires a comprehensive review of relevant work, conducted within the UK and globally within academia, industry and relevant Governmental and Non-Governmental bodies, in the development or understanding of non-canine olfactory sensing models. This should include a review of all potential small-animal olfactory models, all insect based olfaction models, including in both cases genetic modification or potential genetic modification to improve sensing capabilities. Further specific requirements will be detailed within the Invitation to Tender (ITT) document.
