Policy makers need to know about doctors' career dynamics. This includes factors which influence doctorsâ€™ career choice and progression, including movement in and out of the NHS; views of doctors on their training and experience of work; how such views change over time; and the influence of increasing numbers of women in the workforce. Robust longitudinal methodologies are required, utilising and continuing existing relationships with doctors. The research team should also be able to respond to a wide range of specific and often urgent requests for information, within the broad scope of the research.
