Barking Shop Shutters

London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD) invites submissions from established and emerging artists, illustrators, designers and makers. LBBD has secured funding for a comprehensive range of improvements in Barking Town Centre from Round 2 of the Mayor of London’s Outer London Fund (OLF). One particular project addresses the problem of plain security shutters and unattractive shop fronts in the town centre which can harm the visual appearance of an area and increase perceptions of crime and anti-social behaviour. The majority of shutters are in good condition but require aesthetic enhancement to change their appearance to be more vibrant and welcoming as one walks through Barking. Artistic imaginary, illustrations, graphic designs, or the use of single bold colours could be added to several shutters. Individual shutters may reflect the shops merchandise, and relate to more extensive improvements to the signage and overall shop front appearance. Alternative options could also look at shop fronts and improving the visual appearance of existing signage, canopies or glazing, window installations, bespoke furniture, merchandise, sign writing, lighting and staff livery or product designs for better window displays. The total budget is £75,000 excluding VAT which needs to cover every element of the project including consultation and engagement, design, materials, manufacturing and installation. All funding must be spent by March 2014 but it is the intention that the project starts by the end of this year and is delivered by September 2013.
