The International Energy Agency (IEA) runs more than 40 multilateral technology initiatives (also referred to as Implementing Agreements), covering the entire spectrum of energy policy. These initiatives enable member and non-member countries, businesses, industries, international organisations and non-government organisations to share research on breakthrough technologies, to fill existing research gaps, to build pilot plants and to carry out deployment or demonstration programmes. The UK is a member of the IEA Heat Pump Implementing Agreement, which runs a range of research programmes relating to heat pumps. Details of recent research projects (known as Annexes) can be found here: (www.heatpumpcentre.org). IEA Annex 34 investigated the thermodynamic behaviour of a range of fuel driven heat pumps. The associated reports are available here: http://www.annex34.org/. The IEA now plans to start a new research annex, specifically focussing on gas fired sorption heat pumps for the domestic and small commercial sectors. Given the extent to which gas is currently used in UK homes and businesses, DECC considers this research annex to be of interest to the UK, and now wishes to commission research in support of the aims of the Annex.
