To understand the actual environmental impact of de-icing agents and formulations and to produce a environmental impact assessment methodology

The project is in two parts. Initially to design and carry out a sampling programme of the road / rail network during conditions of discharge in to the environment of commonly used de-icers in to surface waters. The results of this survey should then be used to develop a impact assessment methodology that can be used to inform Environment Agency staff and external partners on best available environmental options for de-icer use.
