388560-2012: UK-York: construction work for art and cultural buildings

The concise objective is to create a must see sustainable York Art Gallery within the existing footprint of the listed building. The gallery space will grow by more than 60 % and be used to display contemporary and modern visual arts through an ambitious exhibition programme and the new Centre of British Studio Ceramics.
The Project Objectives have been set out by the Client in proposals and funding application documents as audience research at York Art Gallery shows and an appetite for more contemporary and challenging art. The primary objectives are summarised as:
— creating a ‘must see’, sustainable York Art Gallery within the existing footprint of the listed building. The Gallery space will grow by more than 60 % and be used to display contemporary and modern visual arts, through an ambitious exhibition programme and the new Centre for British Studio Ceramics fully develop the footprint of the existing 19th century building to create a new arts destination for the people of Yorkshire and cultural visitors,
— refurbish the York Art Gallery will be fit for the 21st century. The current inefficient performance of the building will be radically improved by 30 % through insulation of its envelope, replacement of its old plant and introduction of some format of renewable energy sources,
— develop a gallery that forms a crucial element of the developing vision for the York Abbey site, opening up direct access from the rear of the Gallery to the new gardens currently being developed there,
— Internally, the display space will grow by 60 %, which will be used to show contemporary and modern visual arts through an ambitious programme and the new Centre for British Studio Ceramics,
— a suite of three new exhibition space will be formed by incorporating rooms currently occupied by the City Archives, providing 600m² of connected, high-security, climate controlled galleries. This will allow York Art Gallery to put on, and charge for, exhibitions of international quality,
— the public space on the fist floor will grow even more substantially, making use of the height of the Victorian building adding 450m² of high quality gallery space. It will reveal the remarkable architecture of the ‘Secret Gallery’ to everyone for the first time in decades. This will become the Centre for British Studio Ceramics. A new gallery above the existing South Gallery will complete the circuit of interlinked public spaces and reveal views over the Abbey,
— Anthony Shaw has recently deposited his collection of 800 ceramic works by contemporary British ceramicists, adding a new dimension to York’s and firmly establishing its international significance,
— the wider range of art on display will attract a significantly larger and more diverse audience offering the opportunity to introduce them to a greater range of contemporary visual arts,
— the displays will be supported by study and activity areas, an upgraded painting store and visible ‘open’ storage for ceramics, and improvements to public facilities,
— reveal the architecture of the Building,
— introduce a design for refurbishment which is attractive, easily accessed and connects the newly formed areas,
— the quality of the build and finish is as high as budgets permit,
— develop creative solutions for permanent and temporary exhibition design and interpretation,
— to deliver the project within budget and time restraints,
— ensure security levels are reflective of requirements for in house and external collections.
