26450-2013: UK-Manchester: Design and execution of research and development

Nowgen, part of the University of Manchester and the Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust invites tenders for qualitative research projects to be undertaken in Spain and Poland. Tendering organisations can submit proposals to undertake the qualitative research project in either Spain or Poland or in both Spain and Poland if they are able to. This research project will form part of Nowgen's contribution to an Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) (http://www.imi.europa.eu/) funded project - the European Patients' Academy on Therapeutic Innovation (EUPATI).
EUPATI aims to develop accessible, well-structured and user friendly patient information, education and training materials covering all stages of the medicines development process for three audiences: 1) Expert Patients; 2) Patient Advocates and 3) Patients at large. The aims of the proposed qualitative research project are to explore;
1. Patients' and the public's knowledge and attitudes towards pharmaceutical medicines development;
2. Health professionals', policy makers' and pharmaceutical industry representatives' perspectives on the involvement and engagement of patients and the public in medicines development.
The proposed methodology for this research is to conduct a series of face-to-face focus groups, in native language, with purposively selected samples of: a) Patients (Patient advocates; Expert patients and Patients at large); b) Members of the general public; c) Health professionals; d) Policy makers and advisers and e) Pharmaceutical Industry professionals.
The organisation awarded the tender would be expected to:
i) Identify and sample participants;
ii) Work with Nowgen, University of Manchester to obtain appropriate ethical approvals for the work;
iii) Conduct focus groups and audio tape and transcribe them for analysis;
iv) Undertake data analysis in collaboration with Nowgen;
v) Write a report of the study's findings.
Nowgen welcomes proposals from academic departments, independent research organisations, and independent research consultants.
All proposals will be assessed by Nowgen and other representatives from the work package using a pre-established scoring system. This will be made available as part of the tender documentation.
The organisation awarded the tender will be expected to have regular contact with Nowgen and other work package three members during the course of the project.
The project duration is expected to be 6 months.
Up to EUR 50 000 is available for each project, i.e. up to EUR 50 000 for work undertaken in Poland and up to EUR 50 000 for work undertaken in Spain.
If an organisation would like to bid to undertake the projects in both Spain and Poland then up to EUR 100 000 will be available.
