English Heritage is inviting tenders for a project to assist with the reburial of architectural sandstone which will free up expensive space in stores, and provide much needed evidence to inform in situ preservation decisions. The proposed project will collate existing knowledge on sandstone deterioration under ground. It will test designs for the reburial clamps over a three year period to determine the optimum design. The deterioration rates of sandstones will be assessed and related to the parameters inside the clamp and the weather driving those parameters, to develop a numerical damage function. This will allow clamps to be assessed in different locations. A range of other stone types will also be included to determine deterioration rates and develop guidance for the sector as to when such an approach is appropriate. Further details are contained in the project brief which is available for download in the Supporting Documents section (see below).
