RURAL BUILDINGS AND THEIR SETTINGS – NATIONAL CO-ORDINATION FOR FARMSTEADS AND LANDSCAPES STATEMENTS

English Heritage is inviting tenders for a project which will provide a summary of the distribution of farmstead types with a national map and the co-ordination of maps for the Landscape and Settlement sections of the Farmsteads and Landscapes Statements for 43 National Character Areas. It will also supply photographs, maps and amended text for Farmsteads and Landscapes Statements for 16 National Character Areas (NCAs) in East Anglia (10 areas), and remaining parts of south west England (6 areas). As well as an overview of draft statements for all the NCAs to inform final editing of documents (out of scope of this project) English Heritage has developed a revised thesaurus of terms for historic farmsteads and farm buildings, now being integrated into the Farmsteads Assessment Guidance, and the National Character Areas (NCAs) provide a framework for deepening this understanding to a local level. These NCAs are significant for the historic environment, as they are the framework used for delivery of the agri-environment schemes and are used for local planning and land management in England. They combine a broad understanding of the historic environment with physical landscape character and the natural environment. English Heritage is providing suppport and comment for the revision of the NCA Profiles by Natural England, so that they can be updated by the end of 2013 in line with the recommendations in the Natural Environment White Paper. The Farmsteads and Landscapes Statements have been designed to complement these. Further details are contained in the project brief which is available for download in the Supporting Documents section (see below).
