Historic Railway Buildings and Structures: an overview of development pressure and review of significance

English Heritage is inviting tenders for a project to provide an overview of development pressure and review of significance of Historic Railway Buildings and Structures. As the railway industry enters a period of increasing change and updating, it is important that the threats and benefits are characterised, that the geographical areas of change are mapped and that the understanding of the railway's significance is based upon the most up to date information. Much has been written by professional transport and architectural historians, industrial archaeologists and enthusiasts about the English railway and no doubt a great many conclusions have been made in the past which stand up well to modern scrutiny. Nevertheless, the most recent Designation Department overview of the standing historic stock is now out of date and needs to be updated. In particular, any necessary building surveys and recording should be identified, and indications as to gaps in the designation base. Further details are contained in the project brief which is available for download in the Supporting Documents section (see below).
