The Office for National Statistics is looking for regular collection on meat prices. The data requirements can be broken down into rules as follows: o Point of price/sale: We need prices of meat at the production level (i.e. out of the factory - post 'processing') and not retail prices which reflect retailers' profit margins. o Accuracy: The prices of meat must be comparable over time. This means the product specification must not change frequently and must be representative of what producers purchase. o Timeliness: Ideally weekly/fortnightly price data. o Coverage: A variety of cuts and meats whose data is collected regularly, allowing comparability. o Geography: National prices collected in a methodologically uniform way would be appropriate.
